Zephyranthes katherinae 'Jacala Red'

Barry Clark

This is Z. katherinae 'Jacala Red', and just to note that there is also a yellow flowered form of this species. I have selected several candidates for using pollen of this species on. I did notice that the red pigmentation is not uniform on the petals, it is somewhat streaked when you look closely.

This is supposed to have some very high and strange chromosome number(s) and is reported to me as difficult to cross onto anything else. The species is apomictic, but the pollen is fertile to some degree. Most breeders made a mistake when they crossed it with whites and pinks. They should have crossed it with dark rose or some dark hybrid of rose and yellow.
