| Zantedeschia jacunda

Robert Archer
I could not help to show two attached photo's of Zanthedeschia
jacunda from the Leolo Mountain taken in December 2000. The scape
is very bright with a deep colour on the lower foothills and gets lighter
towards the plateau. Access to the mountain is very much restricted by
the local people and with limited grazing and occupation rights (land
belongs to the king) many parts of the mountain are still in a good condition
and therefore with Zanthedeschias abundant. Unfortunately this is the
species least suitable for cultivation despites many efforts to grow it.
The related species Z. pentlandii also grows nearby in Sekhukuniland
but although this grows in a larger area it becomes rare because of open
cast mining (this is the area with the richest mines in South Africa)
and of course people and goats!
