This picture was taken in 1994 in the same area of the other pictures. The area was covered with thousands of Nerine huttoniae in full flower after a good rain.

This picture was taken in January this year (2001) in the Fish River Valley
in eastern Cape, South Africa, showing the habitat of Nerine huttoniae.
I have been to the location three times, almost at about the same time
of the year (mid-January). My first visit to the area took place in 1993
when eastern Cape was experiencing the worst drought since 1976. I recall
that in 1993, there was no grass, shrubs or anything in the exact location
as shown in the attached picture. Then, I visited the same place again
in 1994 when the area was inundated with water - obviously after a good
rain -- and thousands of Nerine huttoniae were in full flower (the picture
at top was taken in 1994). In January this year, I visited the same place
again but the rainfall was very little as you can see that the ground
was still bone dry.
