| Lachenalia pustulata Dr Ori Fragman-Sapir (March 24, 2006) Lachenalia is a large genus comprising over 100 species, most of which are native to south-western, southern and western parts of South Africa. Because of its wide distribution and the large number of species, Lachenalia evolve to different shapes and sizes, they also grow in different types of habitats. Different growth conditions also bear implications of the growth cycle of a species. Lachenalia pustulata is a fairly widespread species native to Western Cape. Bulbs growing around Cape Columbine area on the West Coast flower in late Spring, which is much later than other populations. In Cape Columbine, bulbs grow in shallow soil pockets on bare rocks by the sea. These plants are subject to salt laden air and strong wind. Dennis Tsang (Nov 17, 2005)
