Origin: Provinces of Salta and Chaco in north-western Argentina and south-eastern part of Bolivia
Habitat: Xerophytic, hot regions (may reach 45 deg C in mid-summer) in north-western Argentina and Bolivia at about 700 m desert like area; rain only in late spring and summer. Full sun, rocky/sandy slightly alkaline soil.
Varieties/Forms: Different forms and shades of yellow, from creamy white to dark yellow, are known to exist in Argentina.
Cultivation: H. parodii can be grown as a semi-desert plant in sandy soil with sharp drainage. This species enjoys full sun, hot summer and cold winter. In the wild, bulbs go through a 4-month dormant period. In cultivation in milder climates, bulbs may remain evergreen but watering should be withheld when growth is slow down in winter. Flowering in spring.
