Hippeastrum
aulicum
Dennis Tsang
Hippeastrum aulicum (flowered
last month) - the bulb was raised from seed obtained from IBS seed distribution
in 1991. H. aulicum is an almost evergreen species native to central Brasil.
It is one of the very few ephiphytic Hippeastrum that grows in the forest
of Cantareira Mountains north of the City of Sao Paulo, at about 1,000 m
elevation. In its natural habitats, bulbs of this species grow in large
clump and are attached to large trees. In cultivation, the bulbs enjoy acid
soil and a half shaded location. I grow my bulbs in sand with the upper
half of bulbs exposed.
