Haemanthus carneus

I noticed the difficulty the members had of getting the correct colour of the flowers. This flowered in my collection in South Africa in December.

Does anyone have experience with Haemanthus carneus to know about the size
of the leaves? These seem rather large to me, but this is the largest that
I have with no experience on others.

I have had to take ten or twelve pictures to get the correct color. This
light/delicate pink is so hard to capture. The least amount of too bright
light causes the flowers to appear to be white.
This is the second bulb to bloom this year and the flowers are just about to
the end of their "beauty." I had just about given up. BUT - here it is.
All who know Haemanthus carneus will know the accuracy of this color.
Enjoy!

PS. The first one is setting seeds.

This Haemanthus is fairly rare to the extent that few have seen it in
bloom. This picture was taken in my back yard with a hand held Minolta.
The picture was taken in the mid afternoon late this last summer, 1998.
I have had the bulbs for several years and two bloomed this year for the
first time. I managed to collect 6 seeds which have now sent up a leaf.

Haemanthus carneus and humulis subsp hirsutus. Grow in rocky outcrops in
and amongst grass and/or shrubs. Often found in the mist belt regions.
Soil generally poor but some humus/leaf mould gets trapped in the rock
clefts where they occur. Generally found in frost areas that sometimes get
a light cover of snow. Once every 20 years or so, they get a 3 metre/10
foot snow covering for a few days. Greg Pettit (September 20, 2005)
