Crindonna=Amarcrinum

Here are some pictures of some of the first of my Amarcrinum seedlings to flower. All these pictures were of first flowerings and thus far every plant has varied in the shade of pink in the flowers. The flower count averaged at 16 per umbel - some flowered repeatedly in the first year. Those raised from Amaryllis seed took 4 years to flower from seed, while the one Crinum seedling flowered after 3 years. It is quite distinct in flower shape and colour from the Amaryllis seed bred plants being much more hooded and the bottom tepal being narrower and more forward projecting.

There is little difference vegetatively in the plants other than wider leaves in the Crinum seed bred hybrid. Each of the hybrids has a long pseudo stem - around 16 to 17 cms and they are continuing to form larger bulbs. So it will be interesting to see what the flower count is in the coming year. The Amaryllis used should rightly be regarded as an Amarygia variety developed from backcrosses in the early 1900's. It was known here as both Amaryllis multiflora 'Rosea' and as Brunsvigia Rosea and Amaryllis belladonna 'Rosea'.
