Calochortus amabilis

Calochortus amabilis, known as Diogenes Lantern or Golden Globe Tulip, is from section Calochortus, subsection Pulchelli. It grows at low to moderate elevations in the North Coast Ranges of California, from Humboldt and Trinity counties in the north to Marin and Napa counties in the south. It grows in the digger pine belt and in the same areas as coast redwoods on shady slopes in various soils that often contain gravel or rocks. The area it grows in is wet during the mild-winter growing season with 30 or more inches of rain on average. It endures temperatures as low as 10 degrees F. (about -12 degrees C).It is dormant during the dry warm summer into fall.
