Amaryllis belladonna 'Rubra Bicolour'

I was disappointed last year that neither of the monster flowers produced seeds. None of the flowers gave seeds last year. This year is different. 'Rubra Bicolour' packs in the seeds when it gets pollen it likes. I used a mixture from three Crinum bulbispermum color variants and three or four Belladonnas (or Brunsdonnas). None of the seeds appear to have resulted from the Crinum pollen.

A second scape from 'Rubra Bicolour'. I don't know whether this was the same plant that bloomed last year or a sibling. It seems to have enjoyed our very hot summer, and responded with remarkable enthusiasm. The first bloom to open had 14 tepals; the second had 10. The rest were normal. These pictures were taken August 22.

Les Hannibal sent me seeds of the "Rubra Bicolour" Belladonna. This is the first scape from the plants I raised.

According to Les this is the plant depicted in Flore des Serres (1861) as t. 1415. The names given there are Amaryllis belladonna var. rubra and Amaryllis mutabilis speciosa purpurea Truff.
