Allium ampeloprasum

Considered as one of the closest species to cultivated garlic and onion. This is primarily a Mediterranean species. In Israel there are purple flowered plants and green flowered plants. The bulb grows for several years producing only leaves, and than blooms (June-July). At that year the mother bulb dies out and produces dozens to 150 bulblets. At the Jerusalem Botanical Gardens we have a wild population of this species.
